Remembering our true inner nature is an act of becoming alive, it’s an invitation to relax into ourselves and allow what is nature to arise within us to move us. Speaking with all of nature and communing with her is part of our DNA, our human bodies have done this since the beginning of time for physical, emotional and spiritual well-being and healing. This retreat is about gently remembering this way of being in the world, like an elephant walking softly on the earth following ancient pathways, our soul knows the way home and is much wiser and bigger than we realize when given the space to be itself.
Every Wild Remembering journey is inspired by the landscape and its animals, each retreat unfolds in its own unique way through the invitation into presence, peace and creativity. In this 7 night wilderness immersion you will be guided in deep nature connection and intuitive communication practices to support your inner knowing. Activities are woven into the structure of the day, be it while out walking or in a meditation, a guided journey in the bush or in sharing our stories around the fire at night. The practices build a conscious relationship with the earth and this becomes an integrative part of you to remember, to use and cherish for all of your life.
Each day we head out from our secluded tented base camp for morning and afternoon game walks and short drives. Practical knowledge of the environment and the animals are woven together with skills for self-realization. We will read the signs of the wild in their tracks and calls, often walking in silence to attune ours senses to the voice of the earth. We engage with what the wildlife, land and weather presents to us in conscious communion and co-creation with all of nature for whole hearted being.
MEET THE LAND & her animals
The Okavango Delta is a vast wilderness and oasis in the dry sands of the Kalahari Basin of Botswana. This delicate ecosystem is fed annually by floodwaters starting in Angola. It includes permanent swamps and seasonal floodplains which are transformed as far as the waters reach. Our rustic and cosy base camp is called Kwapa Camp, it is in the heart of an extensive private concession in the southern Okavango floodplains. It is home to an abundance of wildlife and all of Africa’s iconic species. Kwapa Camp offers a true and rare wilderness experience.
The landscape is rich in ecological diversity and our daily excursions take us out exploring them all; from floodplains to grasslands, savannahs, woodlands and riverine forests with ancient trees. The open nature of the terrain welcomes easy walking and magnificent opportunities for encounters with wildlife. Permanent waterholes also attract a multitude of species to this pristine sanctuary of nature. The annual flood waters generally reach the camp by the middle to the end August, but cannot be guaranteed each year. If the water comes down the Xudum system in enough volume to fill the floodplains we will be exploring by mokoro as well!
One of the most incredible things to consider when visiting the Okavango is the fact that it is part of a wilderness area stretching unfenced for hundreds of thousands of square kilometres through Moremi Game Reserve, Chobe National Park, the Caprivi Strip of Namibia, southern Angola and southern Zambia. Botswana has set aside 17% of its land for conservation-led, high-yield, low-impact tourism.
Ke a leboga! You are Welcome!
KWAPA TRAIL CAMP
Our base camp is simple and comfortable Kwapa Camp designed to balance wilderness with ease. Each 3×4 metre Meru-style tent has an en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet, hand basin and a bucket shower filled each night with hot water from the fire. The tents are furnished with 2 single camp beds with cotton linens and cosy blankets together with a luggage rack. Soft LED lighting is provided from solar, along with facilities for charging essential devices.
The tents are nestled amidst giant leadwoods and sausage trees providing ample shade and vibrant birdlife. It is a tranquil and unfenced haven where animals roam freely through the camp. A waterhole close by attracts elephants as regular visitors and in the mornings tracks can be found of night time visitors like genet and leopard.
Kwapa is an eco-camp, it is off-grid and has no generator. The night sky is endless with stars and silence. There is no cell phone signal in the greater area for a true digital detox and a nervous system reset.
All meals are included and catered for by the camp’s bush kitchen and excellent staff. Requests for certain meals and dietary requirements can be made. Their is cash bar for soft drinks and alcoholic beverages of your choice.
At Kwapa camp we have the luxoury of exclusive use of this concession area, shared only with an eco guide training school. It is rare that we will see another vehicle or anyone esle except our small group.
OUR daily rhythms
Our days follow a gentle rhythm. We rise with first light and head out with open curiosity to meet what nature has to share with us. We return for a late brunch at the camp followed by free time to relax. As the day cools we gather again for a shorter afternoon walk or sunset spot and night drive. Morning excursions can be 3 to 5hrs and in the late afternoons about 2 to 3 hours. Evenings are shared around the fire reflecting on the day and sharing our experiences.
At Kwapa Camp we also have the magical and unforgettable opportunity to sleep out under the stars for a night around a camp fire. This is an absolute guest favourite and highlight. Comfortable mattrasses and sleeping bags are provided as well as chairs for the night out.

Planning tips
Weather: Participants are recommended to bring both warm and cool clothing, as well as swimming gear (a packing list will be sent to you). Temperatures can vary greatly between day and night, ranging from 7 to 34 degrees Celsius. September is at the end of our South African winter when the bush is dry and open with days getting warmer, inviting excellent game viewing and ease of walking.
Malaria: The Okavango is a low density malaria area and August is also a low risk period. However, participants are encouraged to speak to a healthcare professional about preventative measures. Studies show that Artemisia annua and Artemisia afra are effective in preventing malaria, with fewer side effects than pharmaceutical medication.
Drinking water: the camp has wonderful clean and tasty borehole water. Bottle water can be purchased at the cash bar.
Smoking: the retreat and camp is strictly non smoking.
Fitness: A medium to good level of fitness is required. Walks are gentle, covering 5 to 10km with breaks for activities.
Digital detox: please note there will no wifi at the camp and there is no reception on the reserve. This retreat is a complete digital detox and nervous system reset.
